"Is this the right thing for the business?"

"Is this the right thing for the business?"

Not Everyone Will Approve of Your Business Decisions

One of the hardest lessons I've learned in business is that making the right decision doesn't always mean making the popular one.

People see the outcome of a decision.

They rarely see the responsibility behind it.

When I became a director, it wasn't because I'd always dreamed of running a business.

My Gran was a silent director, and I took over her directorship at a time when businesses were beginning to embrace technology. My Grandad had built an incredible business through hard work and experience, but computers weren't really his thing.

The truth is... they weren't mine either.

I didn't step into the role because I had all the answers.

I stepped into it because I was willing to learn.

I wanted to work alongside my Grandad and help the business move forward, never fully appreciating the responsibility that came with becoming a director.

Looking back, that responsibility has shaped every decision I've made.

Not everyone has agreed with those decisions, and that's okay.

Every significant decision has been based on one simple question:

"Is this in the best interests of the business?"

Not what's easiest.

Not what's most popular.

And certainly not what's best for me personally.

If my motivation had been money or personal gain, I'd have walked away many years ago.

Instead, I chose to honour the opportunity my grandparents gave me by doing my best to protect what they worked so hard to build.

As the years have passed, I've come to realise that leadership isn't about making everyone happy.

It's about making decisions you can stand by, even when they're unpopular, knowing they were made with honesty, integrity and the long-term future of the business in mind.

I'm incredibly grateful that I had my grandparents beside me for as long as I did. They taught me more than they probably ever realised. Today, I still find myself asking the same question before making any major decision:

"Is this the right thing for the business?"

Because if the answer is yes, I can live with the fact that not everyone will agree.
